NBC 15: Former UW Badger teammates help host football clinic

June 15th, 2019 by

MADISON, Wis (WMTV) – Two current NFL players and former University of Wisconsin Badgers came back to Madison on Saturday to teach kids the fundamentals of football.

Nearly 200 kids from all over the state, including members of the Boys and Girls Club of Dane Co., participated in a football clinic co-hosted by Melvin Gordon and James White.

Both former teammates, Gordon is now a running back for the Los Angeles Charges and White a running back for the New England Patriots.

Michael Johnson, CEO of the Girls and Boys Club, said that though this is the first year of the clinic, he hopes that this is a tradition that can continue for many more years.

“Melvin grew up in a Boys and Girls club, he talks about Boys and Girls clubs all the time, so the fact that he is coming back to give back to the community is just absolutely amazing,” Johnson said.

One of the camps coordinators said the clinic helped kids develop their football skills, taught them how to apply discipline from the game to everyday life and more.

WKOW ABC 27: Former Badgers Melvin Gordon and James White return for youth football clinic

June 15th, 2019 by

There has been some stellar running backs in Wisconsin’s football history, and current NFL stars Melvin Gordon and James White are the epitome of the Badgers’ tradition. Both were back in Madison Saturday for a youth football clinic.

White and Gordon were a year apart at UW, now between them they have three Super Bowl rings and two Pro Bowl appearances. Coming back and doing a youth football clinic has been something the two former Wisconsin standouts have wanted to do ever since they left the program.

“I didn’t have this opportunity and I say it all of the time, NFL guys come back and support. Get out here on a college field, it’s amazing man,” Gordon said to reporters with a smile on his face.

White has won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

“Very exciting. We’ve talked about it for a long time, get the kids out here and run around have some fun,” said White. “Teach them a few things about football and about life so definitely a good experience.”

White ranks fifth in school history in rushing yards. (4,015),

WKOW ABC27: Former Badgers return for youth hoops camp

August 2nd, 2018 by

With the NBA preseason still more than a month away, a pair of former Badgers greats are returning to their old stomping grounds to share their knowledge with local youth players. Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky teamed up with ProStart Sports to host a basketball camp at the Sports Enhancement Academy.

“It’s so cool. It’s so cool seeing the youth being excited about basketball,” Dekker said after signing dozens of autographs. “Them to be wearing my jersey is pretty surreal. I always have a sense of appreciation, no matter how many times I do this. To see kids get excited coming to play hoops and just having fun and learning a little bit about the game and getting to interact with them is really cool.”

Dekker has had a busy summer. He was recently married and is preparing for his second season with the Clippers. Following a trade from Houston, Dekker played in 73 games with Los Angeles. He averaged 4.2 points. The 6’9″ forward is hoping his familiarity with the scheme and a healthy body will help him improve those numbers.

On Friday evening inside a sultry Bradford Fieldhouse, Melvin Gordon and Trae Waynes were running through football drills, and a moment of deja vu could have made someone feel like it was the summer of 2010 again and they were preparing for their senior season with the Red Devils.

But how time flies, and sometimes it’s still hard to believe that the former teammates, still close friends, are both about to begin their fourth season in the NFL.
